Fancy wineries and snow! part 1
We decided to get ahead of the rush of Thanksgiving winery touring and went a weekend early. Happily this meant a stop at Sokol Blosser and a free tasting of all the 2008 releases! Crappy weather meant that no outdoor activities were going to happen so why not get drunk? Of course the Sokol Blosser wines were tasty. After tasting the single block wines we felt that the 2008 Dundee Hills...

Blackwood cafe
Since I started working Saturdays, I just can’t bring myself to choke down another Trader Joe’s salad for the 6th time each week.  Also can’t bring myself to get up early and make an awesome breakfast either.  The solution?  The Blackwood Cafe which was kind enough to locate itself within walking distance of my workplace. It took me a while to get there initially because they open at 8am, not...

Up to my eyeballs in pumpkin puree!
Now that I have 2 gallons of pumpkin puree I need to figure out what to do with it. Tonight I’m making vegan pumpkin curry soup. It looks pretty tasty but I’ll let you know how it turns out. I’m trying the vegan recipes because I can’t use dairy unless I want to make some family members VERY uncomfortable. Does anyone have any awesome vegan pumpkin recipes?

Cookies vs. the common cold
Jessi decided to get all sick and snotty, so instead of giving her sympathy, I made cookies.  Cause really, wouldn’t you rather have cookies than “awwww, poor you”? This was a recipe that I found a while back in the Food Network magazine and since I was working in retail at the time I thought it would be much more delicious to bring these to my coworkers than a box of Airborne. Evidently there...

Banks-Vernonia rail trail
Steve Jessi and I have been wanting to hit the luxurious new rail trail between Banks and Vernonia for a couple of months now, but there were large sections of the path that were under construction. Steve checked the website and found that they had finished the construction, and the weather seemed to want to cooperate, so we headed west to give it a try. It was about 30 miles from home, but we...

More gratuitous praise of Hop and Vine
Well they did it again over at The Hop & Vine.  We found out that they were doing a “Brewing up Cocktails” event, and since we missed the first, we HAD to make it there for this one. Les had been hinting that he was overdue for another h&v burger anyway, so this was the perfect excuse to head up to NoPo.  We actually intend to go there  more often, but the drinks are sooooo good we need...

Beer cocktails?
Instead of pint night on Friday we decided to mix it up a bit. Today we will be hanging at the Brewing Up Cocktails event at Hop & Vine. I’m totally excited. There is one made with Full Sail Wassail that has been mulled then they add some whiskey. How awesome is that? Anyway, we will be there at 5:30 (the thing starts at 6) so we can have some fantastic H&V Burgers. Maybe we will...

Coffee on the way to work
Since I am lazy and don’t feel like washing the coffee pot in the morning I often stop and get some on the way to work. I know I’m so different from everyone else in Portland. I want my coffee to taste good but be served quickly. I have finally found one that I will go out of my way for.  I have 2 really good shops near my house plus a Starbucks (mmmm.. pumpkin spice latte). These are...

Why did no one warn me
about the Original Taco House?  A Portland institution since the 1960s, you figure they have to be doing something right. Not so much. Perhaps we should beware the direct mail coupons.  “Welcome to the neighborhood!” they say.  “Get a free entree!”  Well, I guess they wouldn’t be giving it away if it was worth paying money for. Don’t get me wrong, I usually can find something nice to say, even...

Little Big Burger! Try it!
Tuesday night before the North Head show, Steve and I walked over to Little Big Burger for dinner. He had heard the buzz surrounding this tiny burger joint and was keen to try it. I was blissfully unaware of the tastiness that awaited me.  Little Big Burger is located on 10th between Davis and Couch. There is another location on Killingsworth. They have a very small menu which turns out to be...

Bunk Bar
The many articles we’ve seen on Bunk Sandwiches have led us to two conclusions: 1. The sandwiches are awesome.  2.  Don’t bother trying to get one, the line is too long, and you will surely kill someone in a fit of hunger-induced rage when they walk by with their delicious sandwich. But what’s this?  They’ve opened a second spot where they make delicious sandwiches?  And it serves BEER TOO?!?!...

Hair of the Dog tasting room
In an ill-conceived attempt to eat at Olympic Provisions on a Sunday (they’re closed) we wound up at Hair of the Dog Brewery’s new tap room off of Water Ave.  We were actually killing time waiting for Bunk Bar to open at 3pm, but I’ll tell you about that later. The space is really nice considering how many turds passed on the sidewalks leading up to the place.  It was a nice day and they had the...
