Columbia River Brewing
The impressive tour during Zwickelmania 2011 lead us to visit Columbia River Brewing in Hollywood for a recent pint night.  Get there early folks, we weren’t the only ones with this idea.   I really like the space because there are tables set up near the windows that look down on the brewery on the lower floor.  I’m assuming this feature was installed when the building housed Laurelwood prior to...

Chasing fish
Once again we have the Oregonian to thank for a foozing destination.  A few Saturdays ago there was a feature about a woman in Rockaway Beach who has her own smokehouse and has been smoking local seafood for decades, despite personal hardships and various unfortunate life happenings.  Good food?  Quasi-exotic location?  I’m in!   For a change I did the planning for our upcoming destination.  The...

Milwaukie Mexican
I have an extreme affection for Mexican restaurants.  What’s not to love about complimentary home made chips and salsa before you even order?  Part of my enthusiasm about moving west stemmed from the fact that I would be geographically closer to the origins of the cuisine I love.  All of this would lead you to think I’ve been hitting taquerias weekly since I moved to Portland, but that just...

Bar Avignon
We enjoy hanging out and eating and drinking. If you didn’t know this you haven’t been reading our blog. With this in mind we decided to continue our fun after Zwikelmania with a stop at Bar Avignon.  It’s a tiny bar/restaurant/bottle shop on SE Division. The inside is cozy with dark colors and open windows. The kitchen/prep area is open for viewing which makes for nice...

We met an international winemaker
Jessi and I have unintentionally avoided the many winemakers dinners that have been hosted around Portland for most of our stay here.  It’s not that we didn’t want to attend one of these, it’s just that we prefer to do things like afford groceries and pay our bills.  There seems to be a different tax bracket intended for these dinners.  Neither of us reside in it. So shock and surprise when there...

Do you know what a Zwickel is?
Little known fact: this past Saturday was Zwickelmania, one of the best brewing events Portland has in the winter months.  It is also the event from last year that inspired Jessi and I to start blogging.  We literally had a “this is so awesome we need to share it with friends and strangers” epiphany.   Last year we went to North Portland and the near Northeast, so we decided to branch out, and...

Southern Oregon wineries, MLK weekend
Our incredibly moist trip to Southern Oregon ended with a day promising sun and starting with epic fog.  Grants Pass was visible, but as we headed down into the Applegate Valley AVA, visibility dropped to near nothing.  We could see just enough to discover that we’d headed out much too early and most of the wineries were closed.   Instead of camping out like soccer moms for Justin Beiber tickets,...

Crepes anyone?
Once again inspired by Groupon to go someplace I’ve never even heard of, Jessi and I capped our pint night meal of Hot Lips pizza with a stop at Chez Machin for dessert.  Don’t worry, we saved room.  As I said before, I’ve never really heard of the place, but Groupon was offering an excellent 50% off deal and 1.  It’s on SE Hawthorne near my house and  2.  Crepes.  Duh.   With $25 to spend,...

Broder breakfast
Having not been out for breakfast in a while, I asked Steve and Jessi for a suggestion of a place we haven’t been.  They suggested Broder on SE Clinton street, for a Swede-tastic breakfast experience.  They were too lame to join us, but Les and Barb were equal to the task.   Word to the wise, get there early for a weekend breakfast.  It’s tiny in that place.  I think they seat perhaps 10 tables,...
